Perfect Your Sound Edits with This Nifty Pro Tools Feature
Sonic Matching That Matters
Melodyne ARA is a powerful tool that seamlessly integrates with Pro Tools thanks to their semi-recent-ish update.
ARA stands for Audio Random Access, a technology that enables tighter integration between audio editing software and plugins.
Melodyne ARA offers a range of innovative features for manipulating audio, including pitch correction, time stretching, and harmonization.
But what I love it for the most is pitch matching.
Matching the Key of Phone Vibrations
Here's a scenario I encountered while working on short film, Fate Vs Elena. I needed to match the key of two different phone vibrations that I cut in from a sound library that needed two different vibrations against material as he interacted with his phone.
With Melodyne ARA in Pro Tools, accomplishing this task is easier than ever.
Here's a simple step-by-step guide on how to match the key of phone vibrations with Melodyne:
Decide which clip/key you want to match to
Right click on the audio clip and select Melodyne > Edit
In the Melodyne Editor that has now opened up, press play so the note is recorded into the editor
Take note of which note it lands on
Then go to the desired audio clip you're intending to match, repeating steps to 1-4.
Then transpose the key to match the correct note
Right click the transposed audio clip and select Melodyne > Render
It's extremely important to render the clip because if you pass off this edits to a mixer that doesn't have Melodyne supported/redeemed, your edits won't transfer.
By the way, all Pro Tools users should have a redemption code for a basic version of Melodyne. Redeem via your Avid account.
There’s more use cases we can extract with Melodyne ARA, but we’ll save those tips for another day 😉
